We cannot observe reality directly. So, like navigators and astronomers before us, we triangulate it — fixing the unknown from many known points.

No single discipline can see the whole. The project takes bearings from several at once, and attends to where they converge.
Record
Earlier cosmologies, philosophical systems, and historical accounts are read as prior attempts at the same question, and weighed on their merits.
Model
The contemporary scientific picture is considered with equal care: where it is rigorous, where it is provisional, and where it has stopped looking.
